AZ Legislative Update: House Leadership Introduces “Skinny Budget”
Late yesterday afternoon, the Arizona House of Representatives introduced twelve budget bills. The bills are essentially a baseline continuation of this year’s budget or a “skinny budget,” as some refer to it. Spending would go up slightly from $12.358 billion to $12.977 billion, but they leave the state’s $5.3 billion surplus untouched.
Leadership is hoping to hold hearings as early as tomorrow in Appropriations with possible House floor votes on Thursday, depending how things go. The plan would be to pass these bills and then continue working on big issues like water, ESA expansion (school vouchers) and repealing and expanding last year’s tax cut.
That being said, the latest action by the House appears to be just a procedural move given that it is doubtful that this plan has 31 votes to pass the chamber. Additionally, both the Governor’s Office and the Senate are reportedly not onboard with this budget strategy.
