AZ Legislative Update – June 16, 2022

Today marks the 158th day of the Arizona 55th Legislature, 2nd Regular Session. Of the 1,783 bills introduced this year, the Legislature has now passed 306 with the Governor signing 302 and vetoing one.
Despite legislative leadership and the Governor’s Office coming to terms on a proposed $15.1 billion spending package last week, several Republican rank and file members are opposed to the negotiated deal for a variety of reasons. Additionally, House and Senate Democrats are also refusing to get behind the plan.
Lawmakers have only 14 days remaining (before the start of the new fiscal year - July) to pass a FY 2023 budget or state government will shut down.
Leadership is continuing to meet with their caucus members to reach some sort of an agreement; however, time is ticking away. A number of members, both Republicans and Democrats, are planning to be gone over the next couple of weeks which is complicating budget talks and making it nearly impossible for both chambers to pass any bills. That being said, leadership remains optimistic that a deal will get done before the deadline. What that deal looks like, remains a mystery.
