AZ Legislative Update – April 8, 2022
Today marks the 89th day of the Arizona 55th Legislature, 2nd Regular Session and the level of activity at the Capitol has significantly slowed down.
Despite no more committee hearings, floor session in both chambers was limited this week. The Senate only took up a handful of bills each day and the House had an abbreviated schedule, gaveling in on Monday, without hearing any bills, and they did not meet again until Thursday.
While we are quickly approaching the 100th day (typical target date to end session), it appears that we are still a ways away from sine die. Negotiations on the budget are ongoing; however, no significant process has been made. With no budget deal in sight and still no resolution on a special session to “repeal and accelerate” the income tax cut legislation from last year (which would void the November ballot initiative), session is expected to drag on awhile longer, with most people putting their money on a late June adjournment date. That being said, the process is fairly fluid, so things can change rather quickly.
Of the 1,768 bills introduced this year, the Legislature has now passed 146 bills with Governor Ducey signing 118 and vetoing 0.
Monday was the deadline for legislative, state, and federal candidates to turn in their signatures for the 2022 Arizona Primary Election.
